Going Home from the Hospital and Gearing Up!

The doctors made rounds this morning, and finally seemed to realize that there was no further need to keep you there! All along, even YESTERDAY they told us - there's no rush, no hurry, don't plan on taking him home anytime soon, don't get your hopes us, it's going to be awhile - and them - ShaBAM! "Here's your hat, where's your hurry!"

Of course we were excited, but it was so disconcerting! Thank goodness we had been carrying your car seat around with us in the trunk, just in case! But seriously, they really should have at the very least mentioned to us yesterday that there was strong possibility you would leave today, and we should be prepared for discharge!
Among many of the other things that had to happen in the mad scramble before discharge was a hearing test - standard pre-requisite to discharge that hadn't happened yet. So they go the tech up to the NICU in a hurry and she ran the test on you - apparently there is nothing wrong with your hearing!
Mommy signed papers, and then signed more papers, and then signed more papers! It was quite the complicated process! We also scramble to watch the training videos the nurses wanted us to see before we left (most of which were basically pointless - except the infant CPR one - that was good to know!)
In between signing papers and watching videos, Mommy got you dressed in your superman outfit to go home, because she knew Daddy would love it. You even insisted on doing a superman cheer for your last hospital picture!
Then we loaded you into your carseat and nurse Rinda put a wristband with your name on it around the handle of the carseat. She had to walk us out to the car. She was getting a little anxious, because you wanted to eat after we got you in your carseat, so we had to take you out, feed you, and THEN go. It was such a funny change from "we won't even discuss possible discharge with you because it is so far away" to - 24 hours later - "Why is is taking you so long to get it together to leave!" Of course, part of the delay was Mom training Grandma Judy on how to use the videocamera, and what shots she needed for your *homecoming video.
*which you can see on the main blog page, as it is not part of your 'photo' journal.
And of course we had to find sweet nurse Kelly for one last picture before we left! Then Nurse Rinda walked us out of the hospital, buckled your carseat into the car, and we drove back to the Neipps home in San Jose. *Liz and Joe were both overjoyed to finally meet you!
(Again, we only seem to have video footage of that, which you can watch on the main page).
Liz and Joe had folded your laundry and had a pack n play all set up and ready to go, and you snuggled right in for a nap.
Late that night Mom and Grandma Judy finally got a chance to go to target. It was after 10pm, but there were some desperately needed baby essentials! You were angelically good - something Mommy hoped was proof of things to come.
(and it was true -you have continued being an amazingly well-behaved shopper thus far!)
While she was checking out, Mom had a moment of surprising, almost tearful epiphany. In more than five years of hoping, dreaming, and planning for a baby, buying little things here and there for her baby hope chest - dodging questions from the sales clerks about 'when she was due' or 'how old her baby was.' This was the first time she was actually going to purchase something for a child that actually existed - tangible, and real, and ours. So she made sure Grandma Judy got it on camera.
This is a picture of us leaving Target with our 2 carts full of baby gear. Below is a close up of your face in case you can't see it in the picture above - yep, son - you have a good start being patient waiting on the womenfolk to get their shopping done.
